Cleaning gas equipment

To keep natural gas appliances and equipment running safely, maintain and clean them regularly. Here are some tips to reduce fire risk in gas appliances:

» To clean gas appliances, use water-based cleaning solutions. Do not use flammable solvents, such as turpentine or acetone.

» Keep the areas around your gas range, water heater and furnace clean and clear of any flammable material like alcohol or gasoline.

» After cleaning your range and other appliances, make sure the parts are dry before reinstalling. Take care not to damage or change the settings on air shutters or sleeves.

» Keep chimney flues and appliance vents clean and in good condition. If they are clogged or leaking, pollutants and combustion by-products can build up in your home.
